  • I'm a product detail. I'm a great place to add more information about your product such as sizing, material, care and cleaning instructions. This is also a great space to write what makes this product special and how your customers can benefit from this item.

  • Typical privacy notification systems do not clearly present potential privacy risks that you might face when using a smart-connected product (SCP). Normally, consumers need to download privacy policy documents from companies’ websites. These will be addressed in a lengthy privacy policy document, which most consumers do not read or understand. Instead of using a privacy policy document, a spider visualization diagram clearly outlines possible privacy risks by summarizing the types of privacy risks when using an SCP.

An SCP and a privacy notification method will be randomly assigned to you.

For example, AmpStrip, a heart rate monitor, has three sensors (i.e., an ECG sensor, an accelerometer, and a thermistor) to collect and send users’ heart rate data to mobile phones wirelessly (e.g., Bluetooth). Based on the sensors, we can predict what kind of personal information will be collected and estimate the level of privacy risks of SCPs. The new spider map system visualizes the possible privacy risks of AmpStrip.

A diagram visualizes six risk types of personal information that an SCP can collect.

    • Financial data: bank account, financial account, etc.
    • Authentication data: IDs, passwords, fingerprints, iris patterns, etc.
    • Demographic and contact data: phone number, address, gender, education, etc.
    • Location and time data: real-time locations, driving routes, meeting schedules, etc.
    • Personal activities data: personal preferences, social meetings, political tendency, etc.
    • Medical/Family/Judicial data: medical records, heart rates, stress management scores, kids’ schools, kids’ activities, law-breaking history, etc.

*Blue line: Average consumers' perceptions regarding potential privacy risk of the SCP

*Black line: Experts' evaluations regarding potential privacy risk of the SCP

    *Red area: High privacy risk

    *Green area: Low privacy risk
